As an owner of three pets, I can say I really love dogs. I just melt when i see a beautiful young Golden Retriever. This is why it kills me to see so many dogs thrown away in Hong Kong. Many owners start off with good intentions, but over estimate the time and effort required.
Owners often buy pets and then later discover that it’s a lot more work and time then they expected. This often leads to abandonment. The problem is made worse because much of Hong Kong is urbanized. Unfortunately, that is typically not the case. To date, the trend seems to be moving in the wrong direction.
A few critical questions to consider when buying or adopting a pet.
- Do you have the time and dedication?
- Do you have enough room?
- If you are purchasing, are you doing so from a licensed breeder?
- Can you find the type of pet you’re looking for at a rescue center?
- Has dog been weaned from their mother?
The HK government has enacted regulation that makes it illegal for owners to buy animal that have not been weaned or are sold from unlicensed breeders. So if you are considering buying, please ensure you follow the regulations.
